Baptisms at S Giles

Baptisms at S Giles take place during the main 10.30am Eucharist on the first Sunday of each month. Numbers are limited to two or three families per service.

If you are interested in having your child baptised at S Giles please download and complete a Baptism Application Form. This can then be handed to Fr Bruce after the 10.30am Eucharist on Sunday morning and details finalised. (Please do not arrange a date for the Baptism until you have spoken to him first). Fr Bruce can also be contacted on 0151 4765554 Tuesday - Saturday.

At S Giles we request that parents attend at least 3 Sunday services before you can book a Baptism and you will also have some preparation before the Baptism service takes place.

Baptism is something serious, an important part of a person's life and should not be done lightly. By baptising your child you will promise to bring him/her up as a Christian and encourage him/her to be part of the Church. Thus some people use the word Christening.

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a ceremony where water is poured over the child's head three times, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is not just about giving thanks and asking for a blessing. The child is becoming a member of the Christian Church and their parents and godparents take on responsibilities on behalf of the child.

The Church Today

In our parish Churches, in the past, most people bringing children for baptism were believers and worshipping members of that Church, or at least, they had been brought up in the faith and had some contact with the parish Church. Nowadays, that is not always true. Some people come with little belief or understanding of the Christian faith. They might never have been inside a Church before. They want a quick baptism - it seems respectable, the done thing - and then they will never be seen again!

The Church therefore, has a duty to question people asking for baptism, to see if they are sincere and if they understand what they are doing.

After your child's baptism we will keep in touch with you and invite you to return to have your child's footprint added to our Young Pilgrims Wall. Of course you will be welcome at any of the services throughout the year.
