Feast of SS Peter and Paul

13th WEEK in Ordinary Time

TRINITY 6 - Proper 8

Week Beginning 29 June 2008 - Year A

INTRODUCTION

As we call to mind the faith and obedience of S Peter and S Paul, let us follow their example as we offer our worship and respond to God’s word.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading Acts 12:1-11

God sends an angel to free Peter from Herod’s imprisonment. Unbinding Peter, the angel leads him past guards and through gates. Once outside, Peter realises his rescue is no dream.

Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17, 18

Paul, in prison chains, reflects on the completion of his ministry of proclaiming the Gospel, confident that God’s past strength and protection will continue to uphold him into glory.

Holy Gospel Matthew 16:13-19

Peter answers Jesus’ questions about his identity by affirming Jesus as the Messiah. Rejoicing at Peter’s responsiveness to God’s revelation, Jesus declares he will build his Church on such apostolic faith.

THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

FLOWER FESTIVAL

A very big thank you to everyone who has made a donation towards this year’s Flower Festival, your support has been wonderful! Any further donations can be handed to Fr Bruce after the service. There will be a planning meeting for all those involved in arranging flowers this Wednesday at 11am after the 10am Eucharist. Please bring your theme ideas and flower lists with you.

PERSONAL FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

In previous parishes I have produced a small leaflet for people to write down various things they would like to be included in their funeral service; hymns, readings etc. After a few requests I have produced one for S Giles and they are now available at the back of church.

ADVANCED NOTICE

There is to be a special Diocesan Evensong held at the cathedral in advance of this year’s Lambeth Conference. The Diocese will be hosting 9 bishops, (5 from the US, 1 from Brazil, Panama, India and Kenya). It is hoped that representatives from every parish in the diocese will make the effort to attend on Sunday, 13 July at 3pm.

SACRISTAN

Due to the sad death of Beryl Hewitson, we now have a vacancy for a Church Sacristan to take responsibility for keeping the vestry in order. This job involves cleaning the church linen and Eucharistic vessels, also keeping a check on general supplies, such as wine and candles. If anyone would be interested in taking up this important and valued position, please speak to Fr Bruce after today’s service.

CHURCH VESTMENTS

Donations for the new church vestments can still be passed to Fr Bruce over the coming months. Individual chasubles in red, purple (advent and lent), white (Easter) and pink are still needed. The work of Lizzie Wall the embroidery artist commissioned to do the work can be seen at www.ejwall.piczo.com. Thank you to those who have made donations so far.

PCC

There is a vacancy for one person on the PCC. If you would like more details please speak to Fr Bruce.

YEARS MIND

We remember all those whose Years Mind falls this week.

Especially all former members and benefactors of S Giles

P. Rest eternal grant to them O Lord.

R. And may light perpetual shine upon them.

P. May they rest in peace.

R. And rise in glory.
